[Award] Professor NAKANE Akio, Hirosaki University Graduate School of Medicine, Winner of the Japanese Society for Bacteriology Asagawa Award

On Thursday, March 27, 2014, Professor NAKANE Akio, Hirosaki University Graduate School of Medicine, received the Japanese Society for Bacteriology Asagawa Award at Tower Hall Funabori (Edogawa-ku, Tokyo).

The award is entitled:
Host responses to bacterial infections

Reasons for Selection
Professor Nakane has achieved a multitude of outstanding research results with his findings with dynamics and the role of cytokines in the host during bacterial infections, through his unique mouse experiments.
Especially in his master paper which is completed in 1988, Prof. Nakane reported a detailed analysis in an effect of anti-cytokine antibody pre-administration on lethality of Listeria-infected mice. This article demonstrates that Prof. Nakane is a pioneer in the roles of cytokines in the response of Listeria infection.

Throughout 115 years of history, Asagawa Award was established by President KITAZATO Shibasaburo in 1909. This award is named after Dr. ASAGAWA Norihiko who is a colleague under Dr. KITAZATO was passed away at age 42.
This award is given by Japanese Society for Bacteriology to a researcher who has made a remarkable contribution to the development of society.
